A VISIT TO HEYTESBURY...

At last September’s SSF conference, we announced that the 2010 conference and annual dinner will, for various reasons, be two separate events.  The annual conference will be held in London on Saturday 11 September, and we are now able to confirm the date of the dinner.

The dinner will take place on Saturday 22 May at the Angel Inn, Heytesbury, Wiltshire.  Max Egremont, well-known to us as the author of an official biography, will be our guest after-dinner speaker.  Other guests will include the present owners of Heytesbury House, who have kindly agreed to allow a small group to look around the house where Siegfried Sassoon lived from 1933 until his death, during the afternoon of 22 May.  Priority will be given to those who have not been inside the house before; the rest of us will go for a walk around the village, weather permitting.

For obvious reasons, numbers will be strictly limited, and we therefore ask members who are interested in attending to contact the Secretary for further details as soon as possible.

NOTE: For those intending to stay overnight in the area, here are some useful telephone numbers:

Angel Inn, Heytesbury: 01985 840330
Red Lion, Heytesbury: 01985 840315

The George, Codford:  01985 850270
The Dove, Corton: 01985 850 109

There are several other local inns that offer accommodation, and there is a Travelodge in Warminster, approximately 7 miles away.

...AND A VISIT TO CAMBRIDGE

The SSF is also planning a group visit to the exhibition of Sassoon's newly-purchased papers at Cambridge University Library - this is currently scheduled for Saturday 24 July.  Please contact the Secretary as soon as possible if you are interested in participating.

October 2010 - A LONG WEEKEND IN IEPER (YPRES)

We are now accepting bookings for the SSF trip to Ieper, the Belgian city where the SSF has several resident members.  This will not be a "battlefield tour" in the usual sense, though it will include a day trip to the Somme region to look at Sassoon-related sites.  It will be a weekend of fellowship, when we will visit sites that are of relevance to Siegfried Sassoon and his comrades and reflect on the poetry and prose generated by those World War I experiences.

The tour will take place from Thursday 28 October to Sunday 31 October.  The cost of £350 per person includes 3 nights accommodation in Ieper on a half-board basis, with a single room supplement of £30 per person per night.
